Recipes for Whey Protein Powders in High Protein Shakes

This site's homemade protein shake recipes have been organized into nine base ingredient drink categories (many appearing in more than one category). Below is an intro to these base ingredients that can be used with your whey protein powder supplements for your shakes.

Flavors of High Protein Shakes:

Banana Drinks
This is one of the most common ingredients I have found people use in their protein drinks. Bananas are a great energy source and so the recipes in this category are good to start the day or use pre-workout. Banana is also a great flavor in a milk shake.

Chocolate Drinks
Everybody loves chocolate in its various forms. Because chocolate is such a popular flavor, it is one of the most common flavor of protein supplement powders on the market. Some recipes may call for an extra chocolate ingredient to enhance the ‘chocolate-ness’. These may take the form of chocolate ice cream (non-fat and sugar free ideally) or chocolate syrup. If you want the real stuff then maybe you could melt some dark chocolate...mmmmm

Coffee Drinks
There are two reasons to use coffee in your protein shakes. Personally I only use it for the taste and therefore choose decaffeinated instant varieties. You might use a caffeinated instant for that little ‘wake up call’ in the morning.

Cottage Cheese Drinks
Cottage cheese is a great source of high protein and you don’t need to worry about fat content as it is very low. One thing you might worry about though is the flavor. Personally I can’t bring myself to eat cottage cheese by the spoon - it tastes pretty nasty and as much as I would like to force myself to eat for building muscle, I can’t do it. Because of this I rarely use the stuff but I did try it and I know some people who swear it is an important food for muscle building. I've found the key is to hide the taste with other ingredients in your protein shakes.

Fruity Drinks
Fruit, fresh whenever possible, is a great ingredient for your homemade shakes as it is vital for a healthy diet. It’s not always easy to include fresh fruit in your diet so throwing some into your shakes is always a good idea. Fruit contains those needed carbohydrates that fuel your workouts and your day. The complex sugars in fruit are important to any diet (unlike the simple sugars in sweets, sodas, etc). The vitamins they supply are also an important part of everyone’s diet. In this category, the recipes use ‘fruity’ ingredients whether they are fresh fruit, frozen fruit, fruit juice, or fruit concentrate.

Miscellaneous Drinks
There are a few recipes that did not fit into any of the other categories and so I apologize for electing to go with the lazy option by lumping them all together in one 'odd' category of shakes.

Nutty Drinks
This category includes any nut-flavored recipes including use of real nuts, peanut butter (natural of course), and nut essence (almond and coconut). Real nuts and peanut butter add a little more of that aggressively sought after protein. On a side note, I remember reading somewhere some time ago that the best nuts nutritionally speaking are almonds because they are high in protein and low in fats. (I think that is right but if anyone knows better, let me know.)

Oats Drinks
Adding oats to your homemade protein shakes are a great way to turn your shake into a mass gaining shake. They contain complex carbohydrates to keep your energy levels high. They also contain more protein then other cereals. You can cook your oats before adding them to your blender if you want – some people do some prefer not to, I don’t think it makes much difference. I think the flavor of shakes using uncooked oats are a little nuttier.

Supplement-free Drinks
This category was added in recognition of the amount of money that can easily be spent on expensive whey protein supplements. Some of you (myself included) have to budget and so I wanted to provide you with some ideas for creating shakes that still provide excellent protein content without the most expensive ingredient. In fact, I've added instructions on how to make your own homemade 'Mass Milk'. It's a high protein milk mix with a bit of a kick to boost your supplement-free shakes. I'd love to say this is my secret recipe but I was actually told about it by someone else who said he found it somewhere on the internet.
